Rev. LaVerne A. JanssenPastor

    The Rev. LaVerne A. Janssen is a native of Marshfield, Wisconsin. He studied for 2 years at Concordia College in St. Paul, Minnesota. He transferred to Concordia Senior College in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where he graduated in 1972. Two years of seminary training were spent as a vicar at St. Michael Lutheran Church in Fort Myers, Florida. In 1977, he completed requirements for the Master of Divinity degree from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri. Pastor Janssen received his Master’s Degree in Sacred Theology from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis in May of 1991.

    Ordained after graduation in 1977, he was Associate Pastor at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rolla, Missouri, for 14 years. He was also active in the community with Red Cross work and campus ministry at the University of Missouri- Rolla.

    In March of 1992, Pastor Janssen accepted a call from Our Savior Lutheran Church in Abilene, Texas, and was installed as their pastor on April 5, 1992. He has been pastor at Our Savior for almost 25 years. Pastor Janssen enjoys playing the piano and organ, watching football, reading, and spending time with family and friends.

    Pastor Janssen is married to the former Betty Kangas of Ashland, Wisconsin. She is a graduate of Concordia College, St. Paul, Minnesota, and has taught elementary school for nearly 40 years. She most recently taught at St. John’s Episcopal School in Abilene, and then the Abilene Independent School system. Currently, Betty is retired, but is staying active in church and community activities.

    Pastor and Betty’s marriage has been blessed with two sons: Darin and Jeremy. Darin and his wife Laura have two daughters, Libby and Adeline. They live in Weatherford, Texas. Jeremy is single and resides in Irving, Texas.
